Industries

Kushtia is well known for its large, medium, small and cottage industries. Besides, there is one sugar mill named Kushtia Sugar Mills Ltd. in Kushtia district. Notable industries in Kushtia are Kushtia Textile Mills Limited, Eastern Fabrics Ind. Ltd., Bulbul Textile Ltd., Renwick Yajneshwar & Co. (BD) Ltd., BRB Cables Industries Ltd., MRS Industries, BMB Industries, Qiam Metal Ltd. The BSIC industrial city here is rich in profitable industrial establishments. Mohini Mills
Kushtia has long been famous for its weaving industry. Mohini Mohan Chakraborty (1245-1379 BS) of Elingi village in Kumarkhali founded a company called Chakraborty & Sons in Kushtia town and in 1908 he established a textile mill called Mohini Mohan Mills and Company in his own name on 100 bighas of land. The journey of this company started with only eight looms. Later, a total of two and a half thousand workers were employed in this industry of 537 looms. It was declared an enemy property during the Pak-India war in 1965 and was re-nationalized by the government in 1972 after the country became independent. The dhoti and sari made by this mill have been a favorite of the people for a long time. The mill was declared closed in 1982 on the pretext of losses. 

Renwick Yajneshwar & Co. (BD) Ltd

In 1881, Watson & Company built a small-scale agricultural equipment factory at Lakshanhati in Rajshahi district. In 1896, Tagore & Company established a company in present-day Milpara for selling agricultural equipments mainly sugarcane threshing machine and jute. Rabindranath Tagore was one of the three owners of this company. Later, William Renwick, an engineer of the company, built a similar factory in Kushtia. In 1941, it started as a private limited company. Until 1947, the factory was headquartered in Calcutta. After the partition of the country, a Madrasi industrialist named Mr. Desai bought the factory. It was nationalized after the country had become independent. Sugarcane threshing machine, tube wells, equipments for rice, wheat and oil mills are usually made here.
Kushtia Sugar Mills Ltd
The first modern sugar factory was set up at Kushtia in 1830 at Shilaidaha. Kushtia. Sugar Mills Ltd. was established in 1965 as this area was suitable for sugarcane cultivation. The daily sugarcane threshing capacity of this mill is 1524 MT and the production capacity is 150 MT.

BRB Cable Industries Ltd.

Mr. Md. Mojibar Rahman, a glorious son of Kushtia district, established BRB (Bajlar Rahman & Brothers) Cable Industries Ltd. on 23 October 1979 in BSIC Industrial City, Kushtia. Initially, it started production with its own equity and financing from Pubali Bank. When electrification spread across the country in 1994, he simply increased production and expanded the factory in 1996 and 2000 by installing state-of-the-art equipment from the developed countries. At present, it has captured the world cable market after meeting the demand of the country by producing high quality products. At present the products of this industry are exported to many countries of the world including Britain, Germany, Japan. In this factory high quality products like –
1. PVC Wires & Cables 
2. All Aluminum Conductor (AAC) 
3. Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced (AAAC) 
4. FRLS cables
5. Super enameled copper wire etc. are manufactured.
On October 8, 1990, he founded Qiam Metal Industries in the name of his father Qiam Uddin. The alluminium utensils made of metal in this factory have aroused response in different parts of the world including the nonstick kitchen ware, pressure cooker etc. Then in 1992 he founded MRS Industry. At present about 1500 people are employed in these industrial establishments. According to a recent survey conducted by Gobi International in the United Kingdom, BRB Cable Industries is ranked 33rd among the top industries in the world.
